Job Description Summary

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the barriers and opportunities faced by first-generation students, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be committed to fostering an environment that enables first-generation students to be fully prepared to achieve their career development goals. As a career coach, the Assistant Director will provide comprehensive college-to-career coaching services to students and alumni in one-on-one settings, prepare and deliver workshops and programs across campus, and complete a variety of projects on an as-needed basis. As a program manager, she/he will supervise various student programs involving ambassadors or peer-leaders. This role is the key liaison between with Wake Forest's partner organization CPI, specifically their Chief Program Officer, and will provide ongoing reporting and communication

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Develop and implement tailored coaching programs that address the unique professional and career challenges faced by students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.
  • Work directly with a group of junior first-generation students to help as many as possible secure professional internships in the summer of 2024.
  • Work directly with a group of senior first-generation students to help as many as possible secure post-graduation professional or educational opportunities in the summer of 2024.
  • Work directly with senior first-generation students to provide support and professional development education to ensure post-graduation professional or educational preparation in the summer of 2024.
  • Provide strategic individual and group college-to-career transition coaching to WFU students. Engagement may include conducting practice interviews, reviews of job and internship search correspondence, reviews of LinkedIn profiles, professional communication, professional and workplace expectations, and other personalized interactions.
  • Provide specialized programs and workshops to departments, student organizations, Campus Life partners, donors or advancement, and other target groups with the goal of expanding students' knowledge of opportunities, connections to networks and professional influencers, funding opportunities, and developing their ability to articulate their skills, and the value of their major in the workplace.
  • Manage the First Generation Career Ambassador program in partnership with the Office of Personal and Career Development to expand outreach and support for first-generation students.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors, the Wake Forest Scholars office, and our CPI partner organization to deliver support services to ensure a holistic approach to student success.
  • Create handouts, webpages, and other collateral to support students in the college-to-career transition and educate them about the job market and available opportunities.
  • Track and report on data related to program progress.
  • Support the Career Education and Coaching team in building positive relationships with faculty and academic departments.
  • Work with the Career Education and Coaching team to design creative communication strategies with the goal of creating a supportive, evidence-based, inclusive student experience for first-generation students with OPCD and professional support.
  • Ensure activities in Handshake are tracked and updated in a timely manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Arts required
  • 3 - 5 years of professional experience in higher education, corporate or other professional endeavors
  • Experience managing program development and implementation
  • Knowledge of the challenges and opportunities of first-generation college students
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Ability to conduct individual and small group coaching sessions.
Ability to develop and present creative and cutting-edge programming related to all aspects of the college-to-career process.
Ability to collect and (with colleagues) analyze student outcomes and success data.
Experience with a liberal arts student population.
Experience in a work setting outside of academia.
Knowledge of social media, computer-based career assessment and recruiting tools, and job search programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
Knowledge of current employment trends and student trends.
Ability to interact with students and other staff members to accomplish office goals.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Strong initiative, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsible and independent nature: able to set goals and achieve them.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to work occasional evening hours and weekends as needed.
