Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director for Instructional Design will work to shape instructional design efforts across Wake Forest University in accordance with the strategic direction established by the Executive Director
for Online Education and in alignment with the University's stated mission, vision, and values. The Assistant Director will create and manage faculty development offerings for online instructors, develop online courses, and consult with faculty to ensure excellence in online course design and delivery. The Assistant Director will use their project management experience and expertise to ensure the timely production and delivery of the varied instructional design and media projects produced by the Office of Online Education. This position will also directly supervise instructional design and media staff who report through the Office of Online Education.

This position is a hybrid position and will be required to be in the office one day per week.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Direct instructional design practices for online and blended courses supported centrally through the Office of Online Education.
  • Consult with instructors and program leadership to provide instructional design expertise during the exploration, planning, and design of online offerings and programs.
  • Collaborate with and support instructors to create online learning experiences throughout all stages of design and development (i.e., defined learning objectives, course maps, outlines, scripts, slides, videos, assignments, activities, and preparing final products for launch)
  • Manage production process from course design and planning through course launch, communicating with stakeholders, delegating tasks, and executing on-time, complete deliverables.
  • Articulate and reinforce course development and process and faculty responsibilities as well as establish deadlines and create schedule to produce course within given timeframe.
  • Maintain a close relationship with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (as well as other teaching partners) at Wake Forest to coordinate language and practices related to faculty development and instructional design across course modalities.
  • Develop and curate resources to evaluate and shape online course design and delivery.
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide ongoing feedback to instructional design team.
  • Collaboratively work with direct reports to set meaningful performance objectives and complete performance evaluations.
  • Create and deliver faculty development programming.
  • Assist with planning and facilitating communities of practice for instructional design staff and online instructors.
  • Contribute to a transparent and equitable organizational culture where policies and practices related to ethics and equity are understood and lived out by all staff.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Master's degree, or higher, in a relevant discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in a college or university related to instructional design, educational development, online learning, or learning technology.
  • Ability to create positive and open-minded inter-group communications.
  • Project management skills, as demonstrated by at least two years of primary responsibility for the development and delivery lifecycle of online courses.
  • Standing within the broader community of online learning practitioners in higher education (or similar setting), including knowledge of research and best practices in online and blended education.
  • Extensive knowledge of learning theories and matters of educational equity and their relevance to online and blended instruction in Higher Education.
  • Experience conducting quality assurance reviews around the design and delivery of new and existing online courses using internal or external standards.
  • Deep knowledge of learning delivery systems to include the Canvas LMS
  • Strong and comprehensive oral, written, and interpersonal skills that enable one to collaborate effectively with multiple constituencies in a dynamic work environment.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability with at least one of: website design, graphic design, analytics software, or video editing and production.
  • Experience with project management software/applications
Accountabilities:
  • The Associate Director will be responsible for their own work as well as overseeing instructional design staff situated within the Office of Online Education.
Physical Requirements:
  • Sedentary work primarily involves sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
