Job Description Summary

The Assistant Chaplain for Hindu Life at Wake Forest University provides leadership and oversight of support services and programming that responds to the cultural and social needs of Hindu students, faculty, and staff on campus. Through advocacy, development, spiritual support, and coordination of cultural, educational, and social programs and activities, Hindu Life at Wake Forest seeks to create an environment that prompts a rich cross-cultural experience for the entire campus community. The Assistant Chaplain for Hindu Life encourages Hindus and other members of the Wake Forest community to discover shared values across different religious, spiritual, and philosophical perspectives, and negotiate differences in public life. The Religious Engagement focus provides support and advances the exploration and expression of spirituality, religious life, faith-traditions, values and philosophies of life within the context of the Division of Campus Life's Strategic Vision. It provides access to activities and programs that enable interested students to cultivate their spiritual development and to foster a campus atmosphere in which interested members of the Wake Forest community may freely express their religious and spiritual identity.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
Hindu Life
  • Advise, collaborate and give spiritual support and guidance to individual students, student religious life groups and cultural organizations on campus.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Hindu Student Association (HSA), and other groups as needed (i.e. Affinity Groups), including coordination of prayer services and holy day observances on campus, and engagements with area temples.
  • Advocate for the spiritual and logistical needs of the Hindu student community at Wake Forest by examining policies, procedures and practices; and making recommendations for changes to ensure cross-cultural adjustment and retention.
  • Offer the campus community opportunities to learn about the broad Hindu tradition in its theological, pastoral, and cultural dimensions by building relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Invite Hindu speakers and cultural groups to campus.
  • Provide primary oversight of organizing religious functions, worship, meeting, and office space for Hindu life at Wake Forest.
  • Articulate a thoughtful and engaged Hindu perspective on global religious and political developments in public settings, particularly in times of crisis.
  • Encourage and cultivate intellectual inquiry into Hindu faith and life within the Wake Forest community.
  • Support the professional development of our Hindu students, and cultivate relationships with Alumni that can provide support in this area.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of an effective communication strategy for Hindu Life including, but not limited to, print material and websites that describe and promote interest in activities, programs and services sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain.
  • Serve on University and division-wide committees and groups that monitor issues related to Hindu matters and provide training/educational outreach to the University at large.
  • Submit data results for any events or gatherings in order to create reports and analyses setting forth progress and/or adverse trends for appropriate recommendations.
  • Represent Wake Forest University at state and regional levels of Hindu-related organizations (i.e. North American Hindu Chaplains Association).
Religious Engagement
  • Elevate the civic priority of interfaith leadership through programming, relationships, and policies.
  • Create programs that develop students as leaders in interfaith cooperation and endeavor to change the campus discourse about religion and spiritual identity from one of inevitable conflict to one of cooperation.
  • Create programs designed to help students develop the vision, knowledge, and skills needed to create the spaces, organize the social processes and craft the conversations such that students who orient around religion and spiritual identity differently can have a common life together and in so doing enhance their sense of belonging.
  • Create workshops and training modules to help students, faculty, and staff understand and appreciate the implications of religious and spiritual diversity on campus.
  • Provide resources and specific strategies for faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders to use inclusive practices regarding religious accommodations.
  • Consult and work with the campus community to honor interfaith calendar dates when scheduling meetings, events, projects, and due dates.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to cultivate respect of, and accommodation for, diverse religious identities.
  • Create programs that help students begin to think about an increasingly multi-faith world (religious literacy and interfaith etiquette), truth and values in the public domain (framing knowledge and civic engagement), personal identity and purpose - convictions, character, and vocation.
Other Functions:
  • Participate in on-call rotation to help maintain 24-hour availability of spiritual care to emergent crisis situations.
  • Serve on University and division-wide committees and working groups.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree required – preferably in a closely-related field or the liberal arts.
  • Relevant experience working with Hindu students in organizing and implementing programs.
  • Demonstrated a knowledge of Hinduism, proficiency with Hindu sacred texts, and active involvement in your Hindu community.
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of the needs and concerns of Hindu students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse Hindu population at Wake Forest and more broadly a diverse Hindu American community.
  • Strong commitment to fostering a vibrant multi-faith community on campus that welcomes, affirms, and recognizes the participation of students from diverse faith and non-faith traditions.
  • Excellent communication, both verbally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills as well as crisis management skills with a proven ability to work in a team environment. Outstanding organizational and time management skills with ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, the Internet, PowerPoint; working knowledge of website management.
  • Demonstrated communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and creativity in imagining new initiatives and/or new ways of pursuing existing goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies in a multi-faith and ecumenical environment and engage with individuals from a variety of theological/ideological/spiritual perspectives, as well as to think independently and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends is required.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Master's Degree preferred - preferably in a closely-related field or the liberal arts.
  • Basic unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred or willingness to complete.
  • Assistant chaplains who have demonstrated their commitment to continuing professional development and a devotion to the spiritual and emotional health of those they care for, may be promoted to associate chaplain status.
