Village of Oak Lawn - is accepting applications from 5/9/2024 through 6/21/2024. 

Police Patrol Officer Candidates will be required to successfully complete a written examination and an oral interview in order to be placed on an eligibility list.


STARTING SALARY FOR NEW CANDIDATES IS $74,761 WITH INCREASES TO
$93,216 AFTER ONE YEAR AND $111,054 AFTER THREE YEARS!
 
STARTING SALARY FOR LATERAL TRANSFER CANDIDATES IS $92,843 WITH AN
INCREASE TO $111,054 AFTER ONE YEAR!

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Starting salary $74,761 the first year with increases to $93,216 after one year to $111,054 after three years.  Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, pension plan, deferred compensation plan, vacation and sick day benefit package and credit union. 

 SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

AGE
At least twenty-one (21) years of age and under thirty-five (35) years of age, as of the closing date of the application filing period.  Proof of age will be required at time of application.  An exception to the maximum age may apply for veterans who qualify pursuant  to 65 ILCS 5/10.1-2-6(a).

HEALTH:  
Physically and psychologically qualified to sustain the labors and exposures of a Police Patrol Officer.

VISION:     
Minimum of 20/70 uncorrected vision, corrected to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color and depth perception.

CHARACTER:
No convictions of felonies; good moral character.

RESIDENCE:  
United States citizen.  Employees must establish residency within the State of Illinois and within fifty (50) miles of the Village Hall (9446 S. Raymond Ave.) within six months of their date of completion of their probationary period.  Annual tax incentive up to $8,000 if your primary residence is within Village limits.

EDUCATION:  
Successfully completed at least 60 semester (or 90 quarter) hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university as of the date of filing the application for employment. Education will be waived for candidates who have four (4) years of active military duty with an Honorable Discharge and/or who meet the Lateral Transfer Candidate Policy.

Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R) card issued no more than 6 months prior (12/21/23 – 6/21/2024)  to the closing date for filing the application.   (Not required for lateral transfer candidates.)
LANGUAGE:  
Speak, read and write the English language understandably.


DRIVER
QUALIFICATIONS: 
 
Possess a valid driver's license from state of residency.

A $25.00 non-refundable test fee will be payable at time of written exam.

INFORMATION ABOUT OBTAINING AN APPLICATION

Applicants to be notified of date, time and location of all exams. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must pass a pre-employment background check, medical and psychological exams.  Pick up a paper application booklet on the lower-level of the Municipal Center, 9446 S. Raymond Ave., Oak Lawn, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Completed applications must be submitted no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024. Electronic applications need to be submitted online and paper applications should be submitted to the Fire & Police Commission office. Please note the Municipal Center will be closed on May 27, 2024. The following documents will be needed to complete your application:

  • Copy of Birth Certificate.
  • Official college transcripts verifying successful completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of credit from a regionally accredited college or university as of the date of filing the application. (This requirement will be waived for candidates who have completed 4 years of active duty with an honorable discharge in the U.S. military and/or candidates who meet the criteria of the Boards Lateral Transfer Policy.)
  • Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R. Card) issued no more than 6 months prior to the closing date for filing the application. (Not required for lateral transfer candidates.)
  • Copy of DD 214 (Military discharge) if applicable.
  • Copy of Illinois Law Enforcement Standards Training Board certificate along with proof of completion of two full years of service at the regular municipality transferring from, as of the date of filing the application is required for lateral transfer candidates.

 
The following documents will be required if eligible to proceed to an oral interview:

  • Three (3) character Letters of Recommendation - If the candidate passes the written exam and is eligible to participate in the oral interview portion, three (3) letters of recommendation will need to be submitted to the Fire & Police Commission at least five (5) days prior to the oral interview. Please do not wait too long to request your letters as the window between the written and oral interview will be brief. (Letters must be originals only, currently dated, signed and contain the address of the person writing the letter. Letters will not be accepted from any relative, i.e., spouse, parent, sibling, grandparent, etc.)
  •  Signed Release Forms 
  •  Copy of FOID card if applicable.
