Job Summary

Red Butte Garden & Arboretum ( RBGA) is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Intermountain West and together with the University of Utah, is the State Arboretum of Utah. We are located on 100 acres in the foothills on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus. The Garden has welcomed guests since 1985 and consists of over 21 acres of developed gardens and five miles of hiking trails winding through an extensive Natural Area. The Garden; which is community-funded; is renowned for its numerous plant collections, display gardens, 524,000 springtime blooming bulbs; including a vast collection of daffodils; gorgeous private event spaces, a world-class outdoor concert series, and award-winning horticulture-based educational programs.

Red Butte Garden is accessible via several bus routes that stop in Research Park and at the University Medical Center, as well as the Trax Red line, followed by a short walk or on-demand university campus shuttle. The campus shuttle offers a direct line to Red Butte Garden via the Sunnyside Route.

Responsibilities
  1. Manages, schedules, and oversees Red Butte Garden's custodial team. Including helping with custodial tasks in times of need or low staffing.
  2. Monitors costs of providing custodial and maintenance functions.
  3. Develops and implements training programs of custodial and maintenance staff to ensure technical skills, safety, and job knowledge.
  4. Prepares and implements an effective preventative maintenance program for buildings and equipment.
  5. Coordinates and directs the service contract of HVAC equipment through the service contractor.
  6. Establishes and maintains data to include a work order system, cost per square foot, utilities expenses, and all services and repair records.
  7. Supervises custodial crew lead and staff through performance evaluation, counseling, and training on new procedures. Interviews and hires new custodial staff.
  8. Prioritizes requests for projects and prepares plans for project completion, including labor hours, materials and supplies, and equipment necessary.
  9. Evaluates project proposals with lead workers to determine labor and supply inputs and to discuss any necessary modifications to proposal.
  10. Develops and maintains a computerized facilities work order system for scheduling maintenance activities, prioritizing projects, coordinating work assignments, tracking requests, costs and follow-up.
  11. Determines building Renewal and Replacement (R & R) project budget and develops a master plan for implementation of projects.
  12. Coordinates and supervises all R&R projects with Facilities Planning, Physical Plant, and outside contractors.
  13. Makes daily visual inspections of area for cleanliness, work progress, and completed work drawing attention to deficiencies that need to be corrected.
  14. Reviews budget on a weekly basis by analyzing the weekly budget expenditures report, reviewing specific expenditures with each crew leader, and making any adjustments needed.
  15. Holds weekly staff meetings with crew leaders to review weekly schedule, discuss problems, and participate in training.
  16. Works with department director to prioritize facility's projects and budget accordingly.
  17. Provides support and assistance in the garden on exterior projects as needed.
  18. Manages the custodial team's snow efforts in the winter.
  19. Orders supplies for projects, custodial equipment, and facility or building updates.
  20. Attends bi-monthly Red Butte Garden Safety Committee Meetings as the designated safety officer for the Facilities Department.
  21. Monthly Walkthrough with University Facilities Venues District Coordinator to discuss department needs and outstanding work requests.
  22. Performs routine facility maintenance around the Garden and quickly responds to any necessary repairs.
  23. Helps maintain equipment in the workshop.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); four years of progressively more responsible experience; demonstrated interpersonal skills; budgeting and purchasing experience; supply system management; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Experience must include facilities management knowledge in preventative maintenance, HVAC systems and operations, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, interior design, safety coordination, and demonstrated knowledge of custodial activities.
