The John and Marcia Price College of Engineering at the University of Utah (https://www.price.utah.edu/) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of associate professor or professor. This position is to direct and expand geothermal energy research at the Energy & Geoscience Institute ( EGI). The successful candidate could be appointed in Chemical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering, according to background and experience. Successful candidates are expected to manage substantial existing research ventures with the U.S. Department of Energy and develop dynamic, externally-funded research programs that expand national and international recognition, direct graduate student research, and to implement relevant course work at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

We seek the best available candidate with research strengths focusing in geothermal energy-related research – with the ability to manage research agendas for high, medium, and low enthalpy applications. This position would include managing the ongoing DOE Utah FORGE project, and staff members at EGI that support that venture. Continued emphasis would be placed on expanding EGI's reputation as a geothermal center of excellence and in expanding its academic mission.

The Energy & Geoscience Institute ( EGI) is a multidisciplinary energy institute at the University of Utah. For decades, EGI has performed groundbreaking geoscience research around the world, worked on innovative geothermal technologies, and developed a portfolio of carbon dioxide sequestration projects. Currently, EGI manages FORGE (Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy), an EGS (Engineered Geothermal Systems) project funded by the US Department of Energy. The FORGE project has been funded at over $200 M during the last 5 years and additional funding is expected. In addition, EGI has added decarbonization and grid management expertise to provide integrated and optimized solutions across the entire energy value chain for the low carbon future.

The Price College of Engineering and the Energy & Geoscience Institute are committed to fostering and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion ( EDI). We recognize the need to develop a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student body and encourage applicants with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and expertise to apply. The University of Utah values candidates who possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students.

The University of Utah is an R1 research institution and a member of the Association of American Universities ( AAU). It is one of the leading universities in technology innovation and commercialization and is consistently ranked among the top in the US for the number of companies created from academic research labs.

The state of Utah enjoys a thriving economy with consistent recognition as one of the top states for business, job growth and quality of life. Situated in the vibrant urban environment provided by Salt Lake City, the University of Utah also provides ample access to outdoor recreation year round.

All candidates are invited to submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter containing a description of professional experience (including scientific accomplishments and leadership responsibilities), a research plan (up to 3 pages), and teaching strategy (up to 1 page). Applicants should describe their vision for interdisciplinary, geothermal research leadership within the context of the EGI Institute's mission of multidisciplinary bridge building (https://egi.utah.edu).
