THIS IS A GRANT FUNDED POSITION

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Exercise Specialist conducts neuromuscular and fitness assessments on children and adolescents with and without chronic disease, recruits and screens adult and pediatric research volunteers, and provides health and wellness counseling and exercise programming. This position performs duties that include but are not limited to assisting with laboratory and research management, grant submissions, IRB protocols, manuscript editing, data/participant tracking, and data collection.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervises exercise sessions and provides home-based exercise programming.
  2. Manages and coordinates data collection, and evaluation of subjects (children/adolescents/parents) in the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic.
  3. Assists the Pediatric Obesity Program with subject consent by working in the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic to review and verify subjects, meet inclusion and exclusion criteria, and aid those consenting with questions or concerns.
  4. Calls and meet with subjects and parents to discuss consenting, study, and/or program materials.
  5. Maintains up-to-date logs of recruitment/consenting, study, and program activities.
  6. Maintains up-to-date databases with data collected or provided by the Pediatric Obesity Program and Healthy Lifestyle Clinic.
  7. Reviews medical records to determine exercise precautions and contra-indications prior to participant visits.
  8. Completes health-related functional assessments including operation of physical performance testing equipment including isokinetic and isometric strength, CPET (ECG and gas analysis systems) and design/prescribe exercise programs.
  9. Aids preparation of scientific writing (grants, abstracts, and manuscripts) including editing documents, research strategy, and references.
  10. Aids in IRB preparation and editing (including literature search and methodology writing)
  11. Schedules events, budgets, and facilitates meeting grant and study responsibilities.
  12. Recruits, screens, and consents research participants.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or a health and wellness related field. (Master’s Degree preferred.) (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of related experience; OR a combination of education and experience to equal five (5) years.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong ability to work independently.
  • Ability to use PC programs effectively such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and capability to run equipment-associated software.
  • Good interpersonal skills and willingness to work with children, adolescents, adults, and individuals with special needs.
  • Patience to perform tedious procedures in order to obtain precise and accurate measurements.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to be able to describe study procedures for research participants.
  • Must possess ability to integrate knowledge and theory into practice.
  • Ability to compile and report evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of health and wellness interventions.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position occasionally works flexible hours on weekends and evenings.
