The Custodian Grounds Tech position requires the skill set to provide an attractive, safe, and well-groomed exterior for the campus and community to enjoy. This position keeps housing areas free from debris, hazards, and unsightly overgrowth. The attractiveness of our housing units is used as a recruiting tool for prospective students. In addition, this impacts customer satisfaction, retention and thus the income from rent. The primary purpose for the Custodian Grounds Tech is to oversee and participate in the preparation, development, and care of grounds, drives, walkways, landings, stairwells, and parking areas. This position participates in the planting and maintenance of ornamental bedding areas, trees, lawns, and landscaping projects on the Housing side of Campus. The Custodian Tech position involves the use of hand tools and operating both riding and push mowers, power equipment such as pruners, power washers, string trimmers, etc. This position requires driving University vehicles and/or utility carts as well as the incumbent to wear non-slip steel toe shoes and university supplied uniform. During the summer months, the schedule may be changed depending on the needs of the department including the moving of furniture and appliances.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates and maintains specialized ground-keeping equipment in the performance of various maintenance and landscaping tasks; performs specialized tasks associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping including pulling trash from inside and outside buildings and dumpster areas daily (including weekends and holidays); maintains trash chutes/rooms and receptacles at West Campus and on South Campus; planting, fertilizing, watering, pruning, cultivating, weeding, cutting, trimming, and shaping of housing landscape; lifting, or carrying heavy objects, moving light to heavy objects, climbing, reaching, pulling and movement around the assigned buildings.

Moving furniture, appliances, student belongings as requested, clean, sweep, mop, dry vacuum, extract interior space when needed; escort contractors as needed; clean and maintains exterior areas including walkways, lawns, common outdoor areas, volleyball courts, stairwells, landings, walls, ceilings, decks, patios, trash and recycle bins, etc.

Removes snow, ice, human body fluids and other hazards as needed; report any building concerns to supervisor in a timely manner for entry into the work order system; removes leaves, litter, and other debris necessary to maintain the appearance of the complexes; applies chemicals and fertilizers as needed or specified including herbicides, fungicides, growth retardants, and insecticides; mixes and applies agricultural and commercial chemicals in compliance with state and federal regulations on a limited basis; recommend equipment maintenance and repairs, as needed; emergency call back as needed; other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Ability to safely operate machinery, tools, and equipment used in the performance of tasks assigned to this position (mowers, weed-eaters, trimmers, blowers, pruners, saws, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of plant conditions for proper care and reporting.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
  • Ability to operate and trouble shoot grounds equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent; Valid driver's license; free of limitations which prevents being outdoors for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions; capable of continuous walking, lifting at least 50 lbs, and completing other physical requirements of the job.

Preferred Qualifications: Vocational or technical training; two years of experience in lawn maintenance and other horticultural techniques.
