Job Description

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is a full-service laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). It provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research throughout the university, state and regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU Veterinary Health Center. The laboratory handles more than 200,000 specimens a year and serves Missouri's 114 counties and surrounding states by performing over 170,000 diagnostic tests annually. The VMDL also conducts fundamental and applied research to address animal health and public health issues.

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) is seeking to hire a Clinical Lab Technician II to work in the Pathology/Receiving Section. This position entailsanswering phones, filling supply orders, shipping specimens and assisting with administrative duties. Perform package processing and data entry. May cross train on tissue trimming and other pathology floor tasks.

Representative Duties Include:
  • Provide prompt and friendly customer service to clients over the phone. Transfer callers to appropriate lab sections as needed. Assist with inquiries regarding lab testing, reporting, or sample submission, as appropriate.
  • Coordinate client orders for laboratory supplies. Prepare and ship animal specimens in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Assist with filling and scanning of submission records. Archive in accordance with section SOP's.
  • Accurately number specimens, assign to appropriate lab sections and enter client, animal and specimen information into laboratory information system. Review data entry to verify accuracy.
  • Provide basic laboratory maintenance for a safe, clean and orderly environment; includes basic cleaning and ordering of supplies.
  • Follow laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and appropriate Quality Control/Quality Assurance guidelines.
  • May be trained to trim fixed tissue specimens from necropsies and biopsies for submission to the histology lab. Appropriately document trim notes for pathologist review.
  • All other duties as assigned; must be able to obtain rabies vaccinations and possess a valid driver's license.

Shift

Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional Saturday mid-morning.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Good customer service and multi-tasking skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to be vaccinated against rabies virus and work with formalin and animal/poultry specimens.
  • Must have a valid MO driver's license and be able to safely operate the company vehicle.
  • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator when required.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range $16.50 - $17.50 per hour, Salary commensurate with education and experience
