Job Summary

The Appalachian Center is recruiting an undergraduate student to help with collecting floodplain sediments in Walker, KY and processing the sediments resulting from a UNITE grant-funded project beginning on March 1. The fieldwork will occur during the Summer 2024 semester, May 15 – July 15. Field location is in Knox County, Kentucky, and lab analyses will occur in the Slone Research Building and Agricultural Science Building North on the UK campus. A student is critical for project completion, which will provide new insights to the dynamic history of floodplains and related hazards for Knox Countians and insights for eastern Kentucky.

The Appalachian Center environmental research assistant will be helping to collect a vertical sediment profile (2-3 m deep) from the Stinking Creek floodplain in Walker, KY. Dr. Edward Lo will train the assistant in field and lab safety prior to commencing work. Lab work will involve grain size analyses and using common acids to dissolve organic matter in the samples. Clay minerals will be separated and analyzed using X-ray techniques to determine geochemistry and clay mineral composition. The student will gain valuable skills preparing them for graduate school or a professional job.
