Job Summary

The Office of Educational Accessibility is a dynamic office which serves approximately 1,500 students with disabilities and employs 6 full time staff members, 2 graduate assistants, and approximately 13 student workers. The Student Support Specialist will uphold the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the American's with Disabilities Act. The Student Support Specialist will provide direct support to college students with disabilities. The Student Support Specialist will assist students by developing reasonable accommodations, providing on-going mentoring and support, and advocating on behalf of students with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in special education, education, higher education, counseling, human services, or related field. A Bachelor's degree in special education, education, higher education, counseling, human services, or related field, with work experience equivalent to a master's degree.

-Considerable knowledge of laws pertaining to students with disabilities including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to provide accurate information to students and to buffer and protect the University from liability
-Considerable knowledge of the needs of students with a variety of disabilities and the needs of students with disabilities at the secondary level and above.
-Considerable knowledge of reasonable accommodations and learning strategies needed for students with disabilities
-Considerable knowledge of diagnostic testing procedures and strong ability to analyze diagnostic testing/documentation in order to determine disability and to develop reasonable and appropriate accommodations
-Considerable knowledge of assistive technology that can be used to support students with disabilities
-Some knowledge of issues regarding transition into the post-secondary setting
-Some knowledge of university structure, policies and procedures
-Ability to effectively and competently assist students with acquisition of learning strategies, memory techniques, and time management systems that are specific to their individual needs
-Excellent discernment/listening/counseling skills
-Ability to work independently and in a timely manner
-Ability to work effectively in a group
-Ability to address multiple tasks and work efficiently with multiple demands
-Ability to write effectively
-Ability to work well with people
-Ability to work with computer software and assistive technology
-Ability to interact effectively with faculty to facilitate the implementation of accommodations
-Ability to interact with students with clarity and tact

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior working experience directly supporting students with disabilities.
