Summary:

Responsible for management of Perioperative Services which includes the Operating Room, Endoscopy, SDS, PACU, NOSC and Cath Lab.The Perioperative Director is accountable for establishing an environment that promotes a delivery of patient care that is competent, ethical and legal and embraces the AORN and National Standards of Best Practice.The Perioperative Director is responsible for planning, organizing directing and supervising patient care which includes monitoring quality, infection prevention and safety initiatives, personnel, equipment and needs, and development and execution of policy/procedure.The Perioperative Director will coordinate with other NOHS departments to provide the maximum level of customer service to patients, families and surgeons.The director integrates perioperative services into the organizational strategic plan and supports the mission, vision and values to ensure the health systems success. 

 

Other information:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited university is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
a. Current CPR. ACLS Certification encouraged.
b. Certification in Operating Room Nursing within 1 year of employment.

Experience/Skills:
Five or more years experience in operating room nursing.
Two years experience in a managerial operating room position.

Responsibilities:

1.Demonstrates leadership in all day to day operations.

3.Responsible for direct and indirect nursing care of patients.

  • Maintain an environment governed by AORN, SGNA, ASPAN, ACC Best Practice and Clinical Standards.
  • Monitor practices related to SCIP and ACC initiatives.
  • Supervise departmental activities.
  • Follow JCAHO and other regulatory standards specific to direct patient care.
  • Investigate complaints as needed and conduct follow-up immediately.

4.Maintain staffing criteria by approved standards.

  • Staff units according to AORN, SGNA, ASPAN and ACC Clinical Standards.
  • Staff units per NOHS worked hours/unit of measure.
  • Establish guidelines for staff work schedules.
  • Oversee scheduling of employees.
  • Recommend changes to staffing plans.
  • Submit and present requests for FTE’s to committee.
  • Conduct pre-employment interviews and make recommendations to hire.
  • Maintain job descriptions.
  • Resolve staff grievances.
  • Issue disciplinary actions as warranted.

5.Plan, direct and provide appropriate staff development activities.

  • Identify staffing needs.
  • Develop standards of performance.
  • Establishes training programs for employees in collaboration with the Education Department and/or vendors.
  • Oversee plan to ensure competency of all staff.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings in collaboration with coordinators.
  • Ensure orientation policy is followed.
  • Complete coordinator annual appraisals.

6.Maintain adequate resources to provide quality care.

  • Develop, recommend department operating budgets.
  • Recommend capital expenditures appropriate to new services/advanced technology/improved quality.
  • Recommend supplies appropriate to new services/technology/quality advances or to reduce cost to the value analysis team.
  • Initiate, review and maintain contracts specific to perioperative services in collaboration with Legal Services and the VP Surgical/Emergency Services.

7.Establish and maintain Quality, Safety and Infection Prevention goals in collaboration with

respective directors.

  • Review trending calendars quarterly.
  • Review Quantros reports and ensure follow-ups complete.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in CQI teams.
  • Introduce and demonstrate new techniques/procedures to staff/surgeons.
  • Ensure mandatory in-services/CBL modules are attended/completed by staff.
  • Ensure CMS Measures exceed regional and national benchmarks.
  • Ensure NOHS policy/procedures followed.

8.Maintain professional growth through development of skills and knowledge.

  • Assists VP Surgical/Emergency Services in monitoring profitability of procedures.

  • Follow capital equipment, value analysis and charge master processes.
