Job Description:


Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Senior Computer Systems Engineer in Information Technology Services. The Senior Computer Systems Engineer works as part of the Computer Engineering Services team to manage and administer multiple Windows and Linux server-based application, file and web servers. Predict future needs and recommend enhancements or implementation of new technologies to keep pace with customer demands. Perform system and subsystem installation, upgrade, configuration, performance monitoring & tuning, resource management, security, purchasing and backup/recovery. Research and develop current and upcoming Windows, Linux and cloud technologies. Maintain current knowledge of Windows and Linux server releases, cloud based services, management and interoperability, advancements in web technology and campus networking. Provide innovative solutions and excellent customer service while being security minded.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide support in resolving user system deficiencies and determines appropriate action
  • Take direction from IT Manager and other Systems Specialists on a wide variety of system administration projects and tasks
  • Manage Enterprise Backup/Recovery systems in a VMware environment
  • Manage and administer multiple Windows server-based application, file, DNS, Network Printing, and web server services
  • Manage and administer multiple Linux server-based applications
  • Manage and administer cloud based services
  • Able to perform system and subsystem installation, upgrade, configuration, performance monitoring and tuning, resource management, security and user access, backup and recovery, and problem resolution
  • Maintain licensing and maintenance agreements as well as providing recommendations for hardware and system software planning and budgeting
  • Maintain current knowledge in new Windows and Linux server releases, management and interoperability applications, advancements in web technology, and campus networking
  • Follows Standard Operating Policies and Procedures when carrying out position responsibilities and update or create documentation for systems within department throughout operations
  • Assist with IT security risk assessments and mitigation

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and/or work experience
  • Must highly value, encourage, and exhibit a preference for team building/information sharing characteristics with co-workers, supervisors, as well as external/internal customers
  • Working knowledge of enterprise VMware configuration and management
  • Must be capable of responding and working on system issues after hours when deemed necessary by management or system criticality
  • Advanced understanding of professional server, network, and firewall security practices and integrations and management/monitoring programs
  • Considerable and demonstrated knowledge and experience with the installation, maintenance, administration, and support of multi-user Windows-based server systems
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory and networking technology including, but not limited to, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and other protocols
  • Strong aptitude for and the ability to keep up with and apply rapidly changing and evolving information technology
  • Experience with information security standards
PREFERRED:
  • Training or experience in Windows-based server and enterprise level backup systems
  • Working knowledge of Linux operating systems, Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Experience with host scripting languages such as PowerShell, SQL and Bash
  • Experience with managing a rapidly growing population of third party/cloud, ADFS, Shibboleth and other Single-sign-On related authentication technologies
  • Experience with managing e-mail and messaging systems (Exchange, Office365@EDU, etc.) and Windows Software Update Services (WSUS)
