Position Description

Accounting Specialist

Pay Range:                          $53,000-62,000, depending on qualifications, with excellent benefit package

Status:                                  Full-time, Non-Exempt

Reports To:                         Controller

Direct Reports:                 None

Teams:                                 Staff, Finance and Operations, Business Finance

Position Summary:  The purpose of this position is to provide support for accounting and business lending functions within the organization. This includes general administrative support, accounting support and loan portfolio administration. Provides backup to Accounting Specialist. A strong commitment to the vision, mission and values of the Foundation is essential as we work together to serve the communities of central Minnesota. 

 Responsibilities:

  1. Accounting (40%): Prepares lending-related and other miscellaneous general ledger journals for approval. Prepares loan fee invoices. Monitors lending cash balances and assists with monitoring compliance with funding source requirements. Assists with annual audit requirements and schedules. Serves as primary backup to Accounting Specialist (primarily for accounts payable). Completes loan and bank reconciliations each month. Performs other business finance-related quarterly reconciliations and funder reports. Assist Lending Portfolio Manager as needed with data needs for loan loss reserve calculations and portfolio health.
  2. Loan Origination and Closing (30%): Works closely with lending staff to support business lending, with a focus on loan originations. Responsible for collecting loan documents and information and entering into loan management software. Supports correspondence with clients, banks and funders. Monitors lending documentation (eg UCC filings, mortgage recording, certificates of insurance, financial reports, etc.). Assists with drafting loan documents, commitment letters, requests approval from appropriate funding agency, submits check or wire requests. Prepares, schedules and leads loan closings with borrower and conducts post-closing due diligence. Coordinates handoff to the Lending Portfolio Manager.
  3. Loan Servicing (25%): Leads servicing for parent, subsidiary and external partner loan funds. Ensures loan payments are posted and the file export is produced for general ledger journal upload.
  4. Committee, Executive and Office Support (5%): Serves as staff liaison to the Business Finance Committee and Impact Fund subsidiary board and loan committee, including scheduling, preparing meeting packets, and recording notes; participates in team meetings. Provides executive support to the Chief Financial Officer. Completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Leadership Team members. Serves as back-up for assigned core functions. This position will perform assigned duties for the Foundation’s subsidiary, the Impact Fund, as a leased employee.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Position requires advanced knowledge of Excel, including advanced use of pivot tables, complex formulas and basic use of other MS Office products; strong aptitude for working with numbers; strong communications, writing and reporting skills; office practices, procedures and time management abilities; refined critical thinking and problem solving skills; customer service skills; ability to work both independently and in a team environment; and ability to maintain a positive attitude and high level of accuracy and attention to detail in a fast paced, professional environment. Experience with business lending and accounting preferred.

Minimum Requirements:  Position requires two years’ post-secondary education and three years’ experience in accounting, lending or banking and administrative support, or equivalent combination. Position requires a valid driver’s license and insurance coverage or access to reliable transportation. 

Location: This position’s home office is in Little Falls, MN, and requires a portion of worktime in the office. As a hybrid workplace employer, this position allows for some Central Minnesota-based remote work.
