Business Analyst I


Job Summary
The Business Analyst I is an entry level position in the IT Enterprise Applications Support department that acts as an intermediary between the stakeholders and Information Technology Services by identifying and analyzing business needs, conducting requirements gathering, and defining scope and objects for applications integrated with business processes/data and IT Infrastructure. The Business Analyst I will develop documentation and conceptual design using appropriate tools and models from which applications and solutions are developed.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Collaborates with leadership to refine the organization's business analysis capability by maturing tools and techniques used throughout the business analysis process.
  • Partners with business and technology partners to elicit, analyze, translate, and document conceptual business requirements into clear, detailed functional prioritized requirements.
  • Analyzes, documents, and tests program development, logic, process flows and specifications through the analysis and deployment stages.
  • Develops technical documentation (designs, specifications, processes, workflows, gap analysis) and communications. Create artifacts as appropriate, including business case documentation, scope documentation, and process flows.
  • Assesses information technology systems and makes recommendations for solutions or improvements to business processes to better meet business needs. Suggest alternatives to proposed solutions.
  • Reviews progress, evaluates results, recommends new processes, and promotes best practices to address inefficiencies, gaps, or missing processes.
  • Keep up to date on the latest applications of information technology.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • This position requires either five years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and one year of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience developing business requirements, test plans, or process flows utilizing various technologies.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook).


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with ERP or Student Information Systems or highly configurable enterprise systems such as Workday, SAP, Salesforce, Banner, Net Suite.
  • Three years of experience working with database systems.
  • Experience with project management, production support, and customer service.
  • Experience in higher education.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to determine the explicit and implicit needs and requirements of various stakeholders and create documentation such as business case documentation or business requirements summaries.
  • Knowledge of the various software development lifecycles (e.g. Agile, RUP, and Waterfall).
  • Strong analytical skills applied to quickly learning the objectives, structures, operations and policies of a new business area and translate them into application requirements.
  • Advanced interpersonal, problem resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing to achieve targeted outcomes.
  • Skill in mapping, analyzing, and re-engineering business processes in an organization of considerable size and complexity, with various user needs.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to create documentation such as business cases or business requirements summaries
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
