Starting Salary/Pay Range:
$27,131 – 35,000 depending upon experience and
qualifications.

Job Summary:
General Description of Duties:
An employee in this class performs a variety of operational, laboratory, and maintenance duties designed to safely treat and dispose of municipal wastewater in accordance with the NPDES permit. Work is performed on a shift as assigned. Work includes monitoring the plant's operation through observation, mechanical readings, and interpreting the results of standard chemical and biological tests. Work also includes making necessary adjustments in the process as conditions or test results dictate; assisting with the maintenance of equipment; performing cleaning including pressure washing and general cleaning of the facility; performing grounds maintenance including mowing and weedeating; performing standard laboratory duties and tests; and performing record keeping of work activities.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines:
Interested candidates will be assessed on the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of wastewater treatment plants.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.
• Knowledge of the hazards of the work, necessary safety precautions, and relevant OSHA standards.
• Knowledge of the use of computers to record data, prepare reports, and operate plant equipment.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations.
• Ability to detect problems in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures.
• Ability to conduct routine laboratory testing.
• Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
• Ability to read meters, charts, and technical manuals and drawings accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.
Desirable Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology and experience in the maintenance and operation of equipment at a wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid NC Driver's License
• Ability to obtain NC Grade 1 Wastewater Operator Certification within specified time frame.
