The City of Marion Public Works Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for the following positions:
- Equipment Operator II (Street Department)
- Maintenance Worker I (Street Department)
- Collection/Distribution Technician (Utility Maintenance Department)
Maintenance Worker
General Statement of Duties: Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work as a member of a Crew that performs maintenance, repair, and construction work on streets, sidewalks, facilities, grounds, etc. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of grounds, facilities, streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and storm drain systems. Work involves operating a variety of tools and equipment. The Employee is subject to working in both inside and outside environments, but the vast majority of work will be performed outside. The Employee is subject to extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The Employee may be subject to on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Tasks: Mows, trims, and performs landscape work on public right of ways and facilities using mowers, weed eaters, etc. Performs weed removal on city sidewalks, curb lines, and other public rights of ways. Performs tree trimming; uses chainsaws, pole saws, etc. Assists with breaking up and removing damaged concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, etc.; Assists in the construction of new concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, etc.; spreads gravel; helps set concrete forms, pours concrete, brushes and finishes concrete; Assists with repairing and building storm drains, manholes, etc. Patches potholes and utility cuts in asphalt streets; Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching; digs holes with shovel; spreads asphalt; manually grades potholes in streets. Cleans storm drains, ditches, and catch basins. Prepares signboards for street signs; cuts letters and places properly on boards; install signposts. Operates construction equipment such as dump trucks, tamps, air compression driven equipment, jack-hammers, and other related light, medium, and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment. Assists with installing and removing holiday and event decorations and setting up for events; set up tables and chairs; operates and/or works in a bucket to hang and remove banners and holiday decorations; monitors and maintains cleanliness at City events; cleans up following event. Paints tennis and basketball courts, crosswalks, parking zones, etc.; prepares paint, tapes or marks off area, and cleans up. Inspects parks and playground equipment for safety issues; checks bolts, nuts and chain links and tightens or replaces as needed. Assists with snow removal; may drive dump truck to scrape and remove snow and ice or spread salt and sand; cleans trucks. Assists with trade work such as wall construction, building renovations, etc.
Additional Job Duties: Performs related tasks as required or requested. Assists water pipeline repair crew on a limited, as assigned, basis. Assists sewer pipeline repair crew on a limited, as assigned, basis.
Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to safely operate zero-turn type mowers, tractor type mowers, weedeaters, farm tractors, and other landscaping equipment. Working knowledge of how to use the tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in asphalt street maintenance and repair work. Working knowledge of how to use the tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in concrete construction and repair work. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary when performing street maintenance and repair work. Working knowledge of the safe use and operation of vehicles and mechanical equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to operations of motorized equipment. Ability to operate light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty tools and equipment with skill and safety. Ability to exert heavy physical effort. Ability to understand oral instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and citizens. Successful applicant shall be mechanically inclined.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical and trade work, to operate motor vehicles, and to inspect completed work for accuracy and thoroughness.
Desirable Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the ability to read and write and some experience in semi-skilled maintenance or construction work, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements: Possession of appropriate valid North Carolina commercial driver's license or ability to obtain within six months of hire date.
