DESCRIPTION:
To perform technical duties related to daily operations of the information processing center including analysis and programming, computer operations, design and operation of the college data network and user support services; to coordinate assigned activities with other college departments and outside agencies; and to provide support to the Senior Systems Administrator.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
Provide UNIX operating system administration and maintenance services to include console and GUI support.
Recommend and implement procedures to improve the Ellucian Colleague system environment.
Assist college contractual agreements with software and hardware vendors and serves as liaison with various state personnel.
Manage and administer user security and access.
Programming customizations when appropriate.
Assist in the installation of data processing equipment including software and hardware.
Troubleshoot problems with system software to successful resolution.
Monitor systems for performance and security.
Configure, install and maintain server software when applicable.
Assist and maintain operating system and application software release levels in the administrative server environment as published by vendors.
Assist with the installation, documentation, and testing of new system software releases as needed.
Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly backups of server environment.
Participate in annual audit as requested.
Assist in the administration of the College's document imaging and data warehousing environment.
Assist in the administration of Web Advisor, Portal, Self Service, and E-Procurement environments in coordination with Senior Systems Administrator and Director, Network and Video Technologies.
Assist in maintaining documentation that describes the administrative server environment and all operational procedures.
Provide technical support and training to end-users.
Review vendor software bulletins to avoid potential problems and install updates and modifications as required.
Work with network administrator to maintain, update, and configure network and server communications.
Select, install, configure and troubleshoot third party software.
Collaborate with other system administrators across the community college system and at the system's office.
Participate in professional development and required employee training.
Marginal Functions:
Provide staff support to a variety of boards and committees; attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of information systems
Perform other duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Knowledge of:
Ellucian Colleague software or other college administration software.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure Cloud systems.
Computer languages and file structures.
Principles of database technology.
Computer fundamentals, operations and programming techniques.
Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
Methods and techniques of report preparation.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Operational characteristics of equipment used in the area of work assigned.
North Carolina Community College System software and databases.
Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Knowledge of Disaster Recovery and Emergency Preparedness procedures.
Ability to:
Install, test and maintain Red Hat Linux and Unix server software and related peripheral equipment.
Troubleshoot software problems as required.
Prepare and maintain work records.
Prepare clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
Analyze complex needs and requirements and translate them into appropriate, efficient processes.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Perform basic system administration tasks.
Use productivity tools (Microsoft Office products) on a PC to perform many basic job duties required for communication and reporting.
Environmental Conditions:
The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace, and working closely with others.
The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.
Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.
The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.
Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.
Scheduling Conditions:
This is a full-time, 12-month position. This 40-hour per week position requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location. This position provides support on nights, weekends, holidays, and system emergencies when needed.
Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out-of-state travel is limited but may be required for training and conferences.
