Description
Responsible for performing preventative maintenance and general repairs on tractor and trailer units to program and DOT standards, as well as, inventory controls and processing order paperwork. Responsible for maintenance and general repairs to equipment within the Truck Driving and Electrical Lineworker programs.

Examples of Duties
Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 

Diagnose and repair medium to heavy-duty trucks and trailers, including preventative maintenance, inspections, repair to air and hydraulic brakes, tires, warranty procedures, driveline, steering and suspension, electrical, mobile AC refrigeration, and overhaul and engine rebuilds, with safety as the top priority.
Identify, diagnosis, and resolve tractor and trailer related issues, i.e. tachometer, speedometer, power steering, power divider, U-joint, transmission, rear end, A/C, starter, alternator, APU, etc.
Diagnose and repair trailer components such as doors, floors and side panels.
Determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
Keep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on tractor and trailer equipment including routine technical repairs and completing repair orders.
Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
Utilize appropriate resources, such as the parts manual and computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems, determine most effective and efficient method for repair and locate parts.
Document work order details appropriately.
 
Marginal Functions:
 
Remain technically proficient in all areas of the shop including tractor, trailer, tire, and basic parts administration.
Conduct inventory of program equipment; assume responsibilities for labs, shops and other facilities designed primarily for the assigned program.
Abide by all college policies and safety rules and assist in maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and take appropriate actions, recommend process changes, and initiate improvements.
Be a positive role model for all team members providing support and enthusiasm – creating a professional, positive work environment.
Use effective interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships with all internal and external team members.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions:
The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve a garage workspace and heavy equipment.

The employee must maintain environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. confining work spaces and possible exposure to electrical hazards and noise.

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:
This is a full-time position working 40 hours a week, generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Availability to provide technical support on nights, weekends, special events and holidays on any Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute site (or arranged off-campus site) is required as needed.

Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites will be required as needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences.

Experience and Training
Experience
Three years of relevant experience in medium to heavy duty truck repairs. 
 
Training
High School diploma or equivalency required. Training and/or experience in diesel maintenance required.
 
License or Certificate:
Requires the possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Commercial driver's license, class A.
